Have you ever walked into a Pilates class expecting one thing and getting something totally different?
Maybe you signed up for a “Reformer Pilates” session, but it felt more like a fast-paced aerobics class with pulsing pop music and minimal instruction. Or maybe you went to a mat class where the teacher said things like “engage your core” and then moved on without showing you how.
This inconsistency isn’t your fault. It’s the result of an industry that, over time, has split into two major schools of thought: classical and contemporary Pilates.
At Precision Pilates, we believe knowing the difference is key to getting the results you actually want.
What Is Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates is rooted in the original method created by Joseph Pilates himself. It’s a full-body system with a clear, progressive structure:
- It follows a set sequence of exercises, designed to build strength, flexibility, and control in a specific order.
- It uses all the original equipment: Reformer, Cadillac/Tower, Wunda Chair, Mat, Spine Corrector, and more.
- It teaches precision and control, not improvisation. Every movement has a purpose and place in the method.
Classical Pilates is also taught by instructors who have gone through rigorous training programs—often 600+ hours with testing, observation, apprenticeship, and continuing mentorship.
In other words, it’s not made up as you go. It’s a proven system that meets you where you are and carries you to the next level.
What Is Contemporary Pilates?
Contemporary Pilates evolved later, blending the original work with dance, yoga, or physical therapy concepts. It can vary widely depending on the teacher or studio:
- It may use just the Reformer or Mat and skip the rest of the method.
- It often includes choreographed routines and trendy cues.
- It might prioritize experience over structure, leaving gaps in strength or progression.
Contemporary Pilates isn’t necessarily bad. But without the full method behind it, students can hit plateaus, lose motivation, or even get injured from imbalance or lack of alignment.
And with the rise of short-term certifications and influencer-style instruction, many classes are taught by people who simply haven’t been taught themselves.
Why It Matters to You
- Progress you can feel: Classical Pilates gives you a measurable path to success. You’re not just “working out”—you’re transforming how your body moves and feels.
- Safety first: With classical training, instructors are taught to recognize movement patterns, injuries, and imbalances—and correct them before they become a problem.
- Consistency and growth: You’ll build on your skills week after week with a method designed to progress, not just entertain.
What We Do at Precision Pilates
At Precision Pilates, we teach the classical method because we’ve seen firsthand how it changes lives. Our instructors are trained under internationally recognized, comprehensive classical programs—not weekend workshops.
We use the full system—Reformer, Cadillac/Tower, Chair, Mat, and all the tools Joseph Pilates created. Each piece serves a purpose, helping you build strength, confidence, and control that carries over into your everyday life.
You won’t get lost in a crowd, strained in a poorly cued exercise, or left wondering, “Did I do that right?”
We’ll meet you where you are, and take you where you want to go—safely, intelligently, and with real results.
