Real People Fitness Goals!

We all have goals, but it’s important to have fitness goals that grow over time with you.

One of my clients said to me,” I decided I have a new goal: I want to maintain my height as I age!”

I LOVE that! What a great goal! Did you know that research from the Baltimore Longi­tudinal Study of Aging found the average woman between 30 and 70 loses 2 inches?

What if you decided to keep your body healthy, strong, and tall as you aged as one of your fitness goals? What would that look like?  

First, let’s look at why we shrink as we age. What actually causes you to get shorter as you age?

  • You can lose height because the discs between the vertebrae in the spine dehydrate and compress.
  • The aging spine can also become more curved, and vertebrae can collapse (called a compression fracture) due to loss of bone density (osteoporosis).
  • Loss of muscles in the torso can also contribute to stooped posture.
  • Even the gradual flattening of the arches of the feet can make you slightly shorter.

How do we Slow the Shrinking?

So, what can we do to slow the shrinking process?

You may be able to slow shrinkage by taking steps that will help protect your bones and muscles.

Things like consuming adequate calcium, vitamin D, and other bone-healthy nutrients; not drinking alcohol to excess; and not smoking will help! Doing weight bearing exercise and strengthening the muscles that support your spine is also very important.

If you are wondering what type of exercises might fall in to this description, let me tell you about my favorite two!  

#1 is walking.  I love walking as part of your fitness and health plan because it really doesn’t take a lot of special effort or equipment. All you need is you and a place to walk. It’s also a skill that we all already have, so you don’t have to learn anything new. Besides being a great weight bearing, whole-body exercise, it is also great for keeping your heart healthy.  

My other favorite type of exercise is Pilates.  The Pilates method of exercise is designed to teach you how to strengthen your body in a way that strengthens and balances out the muscles along your spine. This is exactly what we all need as we age to help us shrink less! Many of the Pilates exercises are designed to move your spine in a way that actually hydrates the disc in between the vertebrae. Thus, helping you maintain a healthy spine. All of the exercises focus on moving from your center, and strengthening your core muscles that help you maintain your great posture and avoid stooping. The exercise method also focuses on always working in alignment. Which basically means every time you are doing Pilates your are practicing your strengthening your “good posture muscles”.

UPDATE: It's been almost 3 months and I'm about 40 classes in already- yes I love how pilates makes me feel so I've been going regularly. Today I did my first workshop "Magic Circle" and it was so much fun! Plus I learned simple exercises with a small piece of equipment I can easily use at home. I'm even looking 'better', according to people I work with... They want to know what I'm doing that not only am I looking better but have notably more energy. Just pilates with Amy, now if I could only find the willpower to diet I'm sure I'd be even 'more better' :) -------- So, I'm not really a review writer but I have to tell you guys... I LOVE Precision Pilates and owner/instructor Amy Hirsch. As I'm getting older, creakier and generally unfit I was looking for something to ease me back into some sort of physical activity. I never expected to feel so much "looser" and less "bunched up" even after just my 1st class. I think I'm into 8 or 9 classes in just over 3 weeks now. Every time I go, no matter how I feel, I know I'm going to leave with my body feeling better and my sense of well being having been uplifted. The studio is pristine and the equipment is great. I've done both private and group classes and although I thought I would feel self conscious in a group class, (using equipment that is still new to me and also being not that "stretchy" yet :) I wasn't at all. It's a welcoming and friendly environment and everyone there is just plain nice. There are also different level classes to strive to, so I look forward continuing my practice with Amy and team (shout out to Jenn Ward too:) for a long time to come. I wrote this long review because I hope it helps someone like me that was on the fence to just give it a try, I promise you won't be sorry you did! -Diana :)

Precision Pilates has completely transformed my mind, body and spirit. I haven't felt this good in a long time! The entire staff is so enthusiastic, helpful and encouraging, they make me feel right at home in their beautiful studio. Precision Pilates is an excellent studio! I highly recommend! The semi private classes and dedicated instructors have made a HUGE difference. There are different class levels that provide a challenge at my own pace. The knowledgeable instructors watch your form to make sure you are doing the exercises correctly, and provide modifications, if needed. I have lost weight and inches! After my first 3 months, I had a 70% pain reduction in my neck, back, shoulders and knees! I am stronger, more flexible, and fitter than I have been in 25 years!

I am so thrilled to find this studio! In just a short time, I felt so welcomed by this true community. This studio, it’s owner/instructor, instructors, students and team represent PILATES! I can’t believe I found such a top notch studio moving back to Long Island. I am also an instructor but can take any class and be challenged. The equipment and team is of the highest caliber and it’s one of the most beautiful studios I have seen with amazing reformers, towers, chairs and all the apparatuses! I feel the prices are such a value for what you get in results and oh much more with PILATES which is whole mind body movement ! A fabulous, friendly classical pilates studio. Very clean and spacious. Amy is a well-trained instructor who makes sure you are doing each exercise correctly. As she is instructing, she is watching and giving cues so that you get the most out of the workout. If it the exercise isn’t done correctly, you won’t see results. Amy strives to make sure everyone is doing every move properly. I travel 45 minutes to get to Precision… well worth it. I highly recommend Precision Pilates.

Words can't describe the gratitude I have towards this studio. Amy is absolutely incredible! I personally experienced chronic lower back pain for over a year and was desperate for help as 8 months of PT was unsuccessful. I experimented with a private class in the very safe outdoor studio, I was surprised by the workout and agreed to a second and now after 14 sessions my lower back pain is minimal. Now, not only am I thankful for my pain relief I appreciate pilates! The changes I am making, the strength you are giving me, Amy I thank you for your knowledge, genuine care and motivation! I have more flexibility, lost weight, and my clothes fit better. I go twice a week and value the personal attention to correct form and varied exercises and equipment. Clothes not only fit better but now I dropped a size. Amy has offered a more challenging workout that is totally doable, she gives the attention that each individual needs. If you want nutritional support she’s an expert in that also and no additional charge. A 10 week 5 days a week body toning boot camp did not give results like this. It caused a knee issue that has resolved only after Pilates. Precision Pilates is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !👍
